Dancing to the Drumbeats of Africa

Created in the 1970s, the Kuumba African Dance Ensemble fosters a celebration and an appreciation of dance traditions belonging to the African Diaspora.  In recent years, an instrumental component was added to the ensemble to exhibit different drumming styles, including Ghanaian, Calypso, and Samba.  The Kuumba dancers and drummers engage in several performances throughout the school year, culminating in their Annual Spring Show.  Exposing audience members to a multitude of dance forms, Kuumba invites other ethnic dance and musical organizations to perform alongside them in the Spring Show.
