The Art Department, a long stepchild of the academic program, is renamed the Department of Art and Architecture. Faculty size is double that of two years earlier, and major programs are added in art history and architecture. The architecture component, which includes a two-year graduate program, works cooperatively with the School of Engineering, providing strong technical background for students.
By 1950s – 53 classes were offered in painting, drawing, design, and the history and theory of art. Classes were held in the Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery studios and Geology Corner. The department office was in the Old Union.
