The first graduates of the Masters in Education with specialization in Dance received degrees from the School of Education in 1973. In the late 80s, the Dance Division brochure read: “Stanford offers a Master of Arts degree with a dance specialization through the nationally reputed School of Education. The focus of the graduate dance major is the pedagogical preparation of dance students in the techniques and methodologies of dance education. The program places emphasis on both the theoretical and practical aspects of dance. Lectures and readings on the roots of aesthetic education are directed by renowned arts educator, Professor Elliot Eisner. Students may also study dance ethnology, choreography, and a variety of contemporary dance techniques.” The Masters program was later discontinued.
