Dinkelspiel Auditorium

Dinkelspiel Auditorium opens

Hailed with much fanfare as the “theater of tomorrow,” the Florence Hellman Dinkelspiel Memorial Auditorium opened with a production of Douglas Moore’s Pulitzer prize-winning opera The Ballad of Baby Doe.

Built on the site of the old post office, the new hall, with its “fan-shaped” auditorium, was designed by Milton T. Pflueger and the firm Spencer & Ambrose.

Florence Hellman Dinkelspiel (1904-58) was the daughter of German-born American banker and philanthropist Isaac W. Hellman and wife of Lloyd William Dinkelspiel Sr., an attorney, who served as president of Stanford University’s Board of Trustees.
