Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath, poet, musician, and artist from the Indian subcontinent. Besides being Asia’s first Nobel Laureate, winning the literature award for his “profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse” in Gitanjali (“Song Offerings”), a collection of English translations of his Bengali songs, he also composed the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh, and inspired that of Sri Lanka. The choice to commemorate his birth anniversary (Rabindra Jayanti) with a concert stems from the profound cultural influence of his musical works in the subcontinent and around the world.
As an acclaimed exponent of Tagore’s songs, Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya has won several awards including the Independence Day Award, Bangladesh’s highest civilian honor. She is currently a professor at, and the founding chair of, the Department of Dance at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. In 2011, Mrs. Bannya was invited by UNESCO to perform at their Rabindra Jayanti celebrations, in remembrance of the poet’s 150th birthday.
