Wallace Stegner

The Creative Writing Program is born

Prominent novelist Wallace Stegner comes to Stanford from Harvard and establishes Stanford’s Creative Writing with the aim of providing young, talented writers the guidance, encouragement, and funding to further their writing knowledge and craft. “Minds grow by contact with other minds,” Stegner wrote. “The bigger the better, as clouds grow toward thunder by rubbing together.” Alumni include Edward Abbey, Raymond Carver, Harriet Doerr, Robert Haas, Ken Kesey, Philip Levine, Tillie Olsen, ZZ Packer, and Scott Turow. The directors and instructors in the program have been equally distinguished, among them: Wallace Stegner, Yvor Winters, John L’Heureux, Ken Fields, Nancy Packer, Simone DiPiero, Elizabeth Tallent, Tobias Wolff, and Eavan Boland.
