Documentaries by Stanford affiliates to show at international film festival

The 17th United Nations Association Film Festival, an international feast of documentaries, will run Oct. 16-26 at various locations on Stanford’s campus and at other local venues.

The theme of this year’s festival is “Bridging the Gap,” and films include a range of settings from Syria to Stockton. Topics run the gamut from dance and dating to drought and human trafficking.

Eight of the festival’s 70 offerings represent the work of students and alumni of Stanford’s Documentary Film & Video Program.

These include The Apothecary by HELEN HOOD SCHEER ’13, which won the Gold Medal in the documentary category for the 2014 Student Academy Awards, and White Earth by J. CHRISTIAN JENSEN ’14, which took the Silver Medal in the same category this year.

Six other films made by Stanford students and alums include:

Counting the Dead – CATHARINE AXLEY ’15;

Dry Season – MAX GOOD, TYLER TRUMBO ’15;

Light and Dark – VERONICA LOPEZ ’14;

Maria of Many – ALEXANDRA LIVERIS  ’14;

True Son – KEVIN GORDON ’11;

Regarding Susan Sontag – NANCY KATES ’95.

In addition, It all Started with Mom, a documentary about three generations of dating by CATHERINE O’BRIEN, director of business development and client relations for Stanford Video, also will be featured.
