THE INVISIBLE LINE – AMERICA’S NAZI EXPERIMENT
(Germany/US, 53 min)
Director/Producer: Emanuel Rotstein
Former Palo Alto Cubberley history teacher Ron Jones and several of the students from his 1967 sophomore World History class sit for new interviews recounting the weeklong experiment Jones developed on the fly to answer an American student’s never-more-relevant question: how did the German citizenry just allow fascism to claim their country? Jones’ experiment proved all too effective, instructing students and teacher alike about the corrupting appeal of power and all-too-easy submission to self-preservatory instincts.
(Germany, 60 min)
Director/Producer: Elena Horn
The Lesson follows four children through their experience of learning about the Holocaust in a German state school. Filmed over five years during 2014-2019, the film touches upon important social and political issues including the resurgence of the far-right, xenophobia, the fractured, disparate collective memory of National Socialism, and the surprising lack of intimate knowledge of the younger generations on the subject. The film examines how despite the perceived exemplary educational system, new generations are growing indifferent to their nation’s dark past and unwilling to apply the lessons learned to the realities of today. Filmed against the backdrop of changing political scenery during five years of production, in Germany and across the world, the film subtly suggests the urgency and importance in tackling the uncomfortable truths therein.
Please join us for the panel discussion with the filmmakers Elena Horn and Emanuel Rotstein, Mark Hancock Holocaust Scholar and Associate Producer of The Invisible Line and the subject of the film The Invisible Line, Ron Jones.
