The Role of Questions in
Art, Science and the Humanities
Hideo Mabuchi (Stanford University) and Peter N. Miller (American Academy in Rome)
Made possible by funding from the MacArthur Foundation, with additional support from the American Academy in Rome and the Stanford Arts Institute. Produced by 5:00 Films with contributions by Kurt Hickman (Stanford University). Special thanks to the Cantor Arts Center.
Between January and April 2024, Mabuchi and Miller interviewed twelve MacArthur Fellows working in art, science, and the humanities using a fixed template of questions about the role of questions in the interviewees’ research/creative practice and teaching/mentoring. The video recordings and transcripts of these interviews comprise a rich archive of introspection on process by leading practitioners of wide-ranging fields. The edited sequences of excerpts presented below represent preliminary attempts to draw out overarching themes, unexpected resonances, and illuminating points of difference.
