David Byrne and Mala Gaonkar

David Byrne is co-founder of the influential and acclaimed band Talking Heads. As a solo artist, his career has been prolific and wide-ranging. He has written and directed feature films, exhibited visual art for decades and published both fiction and non-fiction writing to great acclaim.

A technology investor at an investment advisory firm, Mala Gaonkar's non-profit work focuses on innovations that shift community behaviors and biases, aiding public health and education outcomes. She is a founding trustee of Ariadne Labs, the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering and Surgo Foundation, and a trustee of Tate. She also serves on the digital advisory board of The Economist.

Anthony Wagner is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Stanford University, where he directs the Stanford Memory Laboratory and co-directs the Stanford Center for Cognitive and Neurobiological Imaging. His research focuses on the psychology and neurobiology of learning, memory, and executive function in healthy individuals and, through collaboration, in clinical populations (schizophrenia; Alzheimer’s disease). His lab uses a variety of techniques, including functional MRI, scalp and intracranial electroencephalography, and transcranial magnetic stimulation. In addition to his basic science and translational research, he examines the implications of neuroscience for the law as a member of the MacArthur Foundation’s Research Network on Law and Neuroscience.

Charles Kronengold has written on twentieth-century Western art music (Elliott Carter, Morton Feldman, John Cage, Debussy, Schoenberg, Varèse), popular-music genres (funk, soul, disco, bossa nova, pop), film, and such philosophical subjects as composers’ intentions, the roles of accidents in theory, and the relevance of African American music to current debates about the “post-secular.” His recent research has concerned the ways that modern artistic genres condition, depict, embody and help to transform the activity of thinking. He is the author of the forthcoming Live Genres in Late Modernity: American Music of the Long 1970s; a book-in-progress, Crediting Thinking in Soul and Dance Music; and, with Adrian Daub, The James Bond Songs: Pop Anthems of Late Capitalism. A new book-project, tentatively titled Sensing Thinking in Urban Cinema, focuses on the audiovisual depiction of nonverbal thinking. He received his B.A. from Yale and his Ph.D. from UC San Diego, and was a Society for the Humanities Fellow at Cornell. At Stanford he is Assistant Professor of Music and affiliated faculty in the American Studies Program. In 2016–17 he is a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center.

Established in 2015 by Pace President Marc Glimcher, Pace Art + Technology is the gallery’s new program dedicated to showcasing interdisciplinary art groups, collectives and studios whose works explore the confluence of art and technology. The initiative is the expansion of Pace’s longstanding commitment to artistic approaches that highlight and emphasize technological and digital methods. Pace Art + Technology launched in 2016 with exhibitions at Pace Menlo Park in California.
