The Manic Monologues

May 2, 2019 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Location: Pigott Theater - Map Link

Stigma can be more fatal than mental illness itself.

The premiere of The Manic Monologues is coming to Stanford University May 2019. This groundbreaking performance showcases captivating stories from those touched by mental illness. You’ll hear true stories about struggle and pain but also triumph and joy.  These diverse narratives will challenge your assumptions about what it means to live with a mental health condition. Mental health is taboo, even here in Silicon Valley. The Manic Monologues aims to disrupt this silence and stigma.

This play is the creation of producer Zachary Burton and director Elisa Hofmeister. Zack is a Stanford Ph.D. student diagnosed with bipolar disorder in May 2017. Elisa is a researcher at the Stanford School of Medicine.

Our international team includes Victoria Maxwell, a performing artist living with multiple mental illnesses and featured in The New York Times, CNN, WSJ, and Psychology Today and Dr. Rona Hu, who for twenty years was the Medical Director of Stanford Hospital’s acute psychiatric inpatient unit, an advisor to the first season of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, and a creator of theatrical vignettes on Asian American mental health, Tom Shroder, who as editor of The Washington Post Magazine oversaw two Pulitzer Prize-winning stories and has edited numerous New York Times bestsellers, and Dr. Seema Yasmin, who is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, medical doctor, and author and current director at the Stanford Health Communication Initiative. We owe a very special thanks to playwright and Pulitzer finalist Amy Freed. We benefit from collaboration with [wit], Stanford’s gender-conscious theater company. Finally, without our brave story contributors, this production would be impossible.

Proceeds of this performance support future performances of the The Manic Monologues across the country and Canada. Let’s disrupt stigma.
