Critical Mass Reframed: A Panel on Kerry Tribe’s Live Re-Performance of Hollis Frampton’s Structural Film

April 17 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Location: Oshman Hall, McMurtry Building - Map Link

Free and open to the public.

Where does a film become a live performance, and how does the history, theory, and criticism of one work translate into another? Sponsored by the Stanford Arts Institute in collaboration with the Stanford Department of Art & Art History, Kerry Tribe (artist, filmmaker, and visiting Lecturer through the Presidential Residencies on the Future of the Arts) will discuss her live performance Critical Mass (2010–) with Stanford faculty members Pavle Levi (Professor, Film and Media Studies) and Peggy Phelan (Denning Family Director of Stanford Arts Institute and Professor of Theater & Performance Studies and of English), and PhD students Jon Davies (Art History) and Christian Whitworth (Art History). Together, they will trace the connections between Tribe’s project and Hollis Frampton’s original 1971 structural film of the same name. Here, a couple’s improvised meltdown stutters through repetitious film fragments sutured through sudden and seemingly endless jump cuts. By returning to Critical Mass, by prolonging the dispute, the panel will reignite a conversation around the pitfalls and potentials of re-mediation between film and performance.

VISITOR INFORMATION: Oshman Hall is located in the McMurtry Building of the Stanford campus at 355 Roth Way. Visitor parking is free after 4 p.m. on weekdays, except by the Oval. Alternatively, take the Caltrain to Palo Alto Transit Center and ride the free Stanford Marguerite Shuttle.
