Themes and Variations: Selected Chamber Music Works of Lenny Carlson

February 9 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Location: Campbell Recital Hall, Braun Music Center - Map Link

Since 2007, Lenny Carlson has been presenting concerts of his music at Stanford performed by various musicians and ensembles. In fact, Frederick Harris played Carlson’s six-movement composition for solo piano, Earth Tones, in 2010 at Campbell Recital Hall. Frederick Harris and Andrew “Endika” Currier are true virtuosi. They have made music together in the past, and their wonderful rapport is evident in the brilliant notes they charm and coax out of their respective instruments.

This program will premiere two compositions: Thumb and Variations (for Jerry Reed) and Down by the Riverside: Theme and Variations (for Frederick Harris). Both works are eclectic in approach and based on American vernacular genres such as spirituals, the blues, and country music. There is no improvisation in these works, but the performers will improvise elsewhere in the program. The program will consist of two sets with one fifteen-minute intermission. A Q&A session will follow the concert.
