Public Art Ranger Station

About the Ranger Station

Stanford's campus boasts a renowned public art collection assembled over decades, with many pieces assessed into the Cantor Arts Center collection. In October 2024, Stanford Arts launched a coordinated new phase of the university’s Public Art Program, focusing on new commissions and the preservation and activation of existing outdoor art. The Public Art Ranger Station, led by Public Art Program Manager Mark Shunney, aims to educate the community about the diverse collection through walking tours and other outreach. Visitors and Stanford affiliates can explore the collection with a Public Art Ranger or through self-guided tours available online and on the Stanford mobile app.

The Public Art Ranger Station is housed in Studio 2, originally built by students as an eco, micro, mobile art space for the street or the foothills. Thank you to Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve staff and leadership for their support in realizing this project. Learn about the history of how Studio 2 was constructed and realized.

Ranger Station Hours

The Public Art Ranger Station is open and staffed on Thursdays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

Meet Our Public Art Ranger

Stanford's Public Art Manager and conceptual artist Mark Shunney constructs work from four-letter words across various media, including performance, installation, video, sound and painting, with themes often inspired by events of personal and global impact. A graduate of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (BFA) and the Rhode Island School of Design (MFA), Shunney began his career in New York City as an artist, curator, and assistant to sculptor Ursula von Rydingsvard before relocating to California. His work is held in private collections in the United States and Europe, and can be viewed by appointment at his studio in Santa Cruz, California.

Stanford’s campus features more than 80 works of outdoor public art, accessible to the public 365 days a year.

Campus Public Art Proposals

Members of the Stanford community (students, faculty, and staff) can submit proposals for temporary public art projects on campus. Proposals are reviewed by the Office of the Vice President for the Arts.

Public Art Committee

Stanford’s Public Art Committee is responsible for overseeing a strategic plan for public art, including both outdoor art and art in public spaces of academic buildings and other campus facilities. The committee aims to make Stanford a destination for public art, drawing on the university’s unique natural and built environment, and to create an experience of creative vitality for all visitors to Stanford’s campus.
