Presidential Residencies – Stanford Arts

Through the Office of the Vice President for the Arts, Stanford University is making a major investment in the future of the arts, supporting cutting-edge artists and mobilizing its strengths across disciplines to inform the next generation of artistic practice.

A pillar of this investment is the Stanford Presidential Residencies on the Future of the Arts, which brings world-renowned artists to Stanford’s campus. The hope is that these residencies will be the beginning of a long, sustained and vital series that brings renowned artists to the campus to engage with the campus community around issues of significant import.

2020-2021 Visiting Artists

EAMON ORE-GIRON
draws on motifs from indigenous and craft traditions alongside aesthetics from the 20th-century avant-garde. His paintings and use of geometric figures bring to mind early Modernist movements, such as Suprematism, Futurism and the Color Field painters of the New York School.

NITIN SAWHNEY
is an award-winning musician, producer, composer, conductor and DJ who has scored for and performed with Paul McCartney, Sting, The London Symphony Orchestra, Anoushka Shankar, and Nelson Mandela, among others, and is a recent recipient of Ivor Novello's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Artist Bio

Nitin Sawhney is a producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist whose diverse repertoire encompasses over 50 film scores. He has released 10 studio albums, the most recent being Dystopian Dream in November 2015.

Sawhney’s substantial theatre/ dance credits include the scores for Complicite’s Olivier Award winning A Disappearing Number and Akram Khan’s also Olivier Award winning Zero Degrees for which Nitin received a Bessie for best score. After scoring Bahok for the Royal Ballet of China, Sawhney’s composition for Khan’s Vertical Road received a best new work Award in Melbourne. Sawhney also worked with Choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui on a production based on the life of Manga creator, Tezuka. Sawhney co- directed and appeared with Khan in the internationally touring and award- winning production, Confluence created for the Svapnagata season at Sadler’s Wells which Sawhney also co-curated with Khan.

Amongst the many films scored by Sawhney, the most recent is Andy Serkis’ directorial debut Breathe starring Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield, which is opening the 2017 London film festival. Currently, Sawhney is working on the new Jungle Book again with Serkis for release in 2018. He has also scored for high profile TV series (including the BBC’s multiple BAFTA winning series Human Planet and the BBC series Wonders of the Monsoon), Cirque  du Soleil, as well as extensive work for video games (primarily Ninja Theory). Nitin has also produced for many acclaimed and diverse artists from Sir Paul McCartney and Sting to Joss Stoneand Anoushka Shankar, as well as producing his own radio series on BBC Radio 2 – Nitin SawhneySpins the Globe.

For all the above, Nitin has been the recipient of a Mercury Prize, two Ivor Novello nominations, a MOBO award, two BBC Radio3 World Music Awards, The Southbank Show Award, 7 University doctorates from different British universities and most recently the 2017 recipient of the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award. Nitin has also collaborated with and scored for the London Symphony Orchestra as well as many other leading orchestras across the world. As a DJ Nitin has also released a number of successful club compilation albums, including Fabriclive 15.

In 2017 he received the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award, and is firmly established as a world-class producer, songwriter, DJ, multi-instrumentalist, orchestral composer and cultural pioneer.

Sawhney has become a modern-day Renaissance man in the worlds of music, film, videogames, dance and theatre. His endless creative curiosity makes him a formidable polymath across the whole artistic range of media associated with the music industry.

With over 20 studio albums to his name, including solo albums, film soundtracks and compilations, he has received a substantial wealth of major national and international awards for the work.

In 2018 Sawhney completed the entire composition of Warner’s big-budget blockbuster, ‘Mowgli’, released in autumn 2018.

KAHLIL JOSEPH
is a filmmaker, and video artist, known for Flying Lotus: Until the Quiet Comes (2013), Beyoncé: Lemonade (2016) and Kendric Lamar: m.A.A.d. (2015), whose work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern, ICA Philadelphia, the New Museum and MOCA.

Kahlil Joseph (b. 1981, Seattle, WA) is an artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. He has had solo shows at the New Museum, New York; the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles as well as two-person exhibitions at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, with his late brother Noah Davis and at Blum & Poe, Los Angeles, with painter Henry Taylor. Joseph has screened his works in the Toronto International Film Festival, the Marfa Film Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival, where he received the Grand Jury Prize for Short Films in 2013. He has also exhibited in group shows at the Studio Museum in Harlem; the Hayward Gallery, London; the Underground Museum, Los Angeles; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. In 2016, Joseph was nominated for an Emmy award for his co-direction of Beyonce’s Lemonade. He is also the recipient of a 2016 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and a 2017 Los Angeles Artadia Award. Joseph also serves as Vice President of the board at The Underground Museum, a vanguard and pioneering independent art museum, exhibition space and community hub in Los Angeles.

INUA ELLAMS
is an internationally touring poet, playwright and performer who has written for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre and the BBC, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Born in Nigeria, Inua Ellams is a cross art form practitioner, a poet, playwright & performer, graphic artist & designer and founder of the Midnight Run — an international, arts-filled, night-time, playful, urban, walking experience. He is a Complete Works poet alumni and a designer at White Space Creative Agency. Across his work, Identity, Displacement & Destiny are reoccurring themes in which he also tries to mix the old with the new: traditional African storytelling with contemporary poetry, pencil with pixel, texture with vector images. His poetry is published by Flipped Eye, Akashic, Nine Arches & several plays by Oberon.

KERRY TRIBE
is a video and performance artist whose work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Modern and SFMoMA.

Artist Bio

Kerry Tribe is a Los Angeles-based video and performance artist. Her performance piece, Critical Mass(2010) was staged at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2010, the Tate Modern in 2012, and several other museums. Tribe’s most recent film, Standardized Patient (2017), premiered at SFMOMA in Fall 2017. She describes her work as “documentary adjacent.”

Tribe will teach two courses at Stanford this year, “ARTSINST 171/271: Art in the Age of Neuroscience” (Winter 2019) and “ARTSINST 172/272: Practice and Critique” (Spring 2019). Through documentary filmmaking, “Art in the Age of Neuroscience” will examine questions of subjective experience while paying particular attention to media and linguistic theory, cognitive psychology and theories of consciousness. “Practice and Critique” is designed to enhance students’ understanding of critical issues within their own work and the work of their peers, and is intended for MFA candidates in Documentary Film or Art Practice or for advanced undergraduates working in visual art or time-based media.
