Detroit Arts Immersion

March 25 - April 1, 2017

About

Students travel with Creative Cities Fellow, Andrew Herscher, for a week-long immersive experience of contemporary art in Detroit. The focus is on the intersections between art, activism, race, and austerity politics. Students can register for the Detroit Arts Immersion separate from any other courses, or may choose to pair it with the winter quarter course How to be Governed Otherwise: Art, Activism, and the City (ARTSINST 180Q). Preference for the Detroit Arts Immersion trip will be given to those enrolled in ARTSINST 180Q.

How to Apply

To be considered for this trip you must submit an application through the Stanford Arts Institute below. If you are accepted, you will receive a permission number to enroll in this 2-unit course.

Applications are welcomed from all undergraduate class years.

Applications were due by 11:59 PM on Friday, January 27, 2017.

Recommended Seminar

Students applying for the Detroit Arts Immersion may also be interested in the winter quarter class How to be Governed Otherwise: Art, Activism, and the City (ARTSINST 180Q). This seminar will introduce students to contemporary art's engagement with political activism. Over the quarter, students will study some of the many artistic interventions that are encompassed by urban activism, from informal and everyday practices to protest, resistance, and occupation. This course is not required in order to participate in the Detroit Arts Immersion, but it will cover related content in a global context. Students enrolled in this course will also receive preference on their Detroit Arts Immersion application.

This course is offered by the Stanford Arts Institute in collaboration with the Introductory Seminars program, and is cross-listed with Urban Studies and Civil & Environmental Engineering.
