Artist Biography
Ursula von Rydingsvard is a sculptor who has been working in Brooklyn, New York, for over 30 years. Best known for creating large-scale, often monumental sculpture from cedar beams, which she painstakingly cuts, assembles, and laminates, finally rubbing powdered graphite into the work’s textured, faceted surfaces. Von Rydingsvard currently has works on view in a collateral event of the 56th Venice Biennale, a monumental sculpture Bronze Bowl with Lace (2015) at the Bluhm Family Terrace at the Arts Institute of Chicago, and an upcoming installation of an 18.5 ft., hand-pounded copper sculpture at Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. Von Rydingsvard will share insights about her recent work and process in her presentation.
