Roberta Smith and Jason Andrew in conversation on Feb. 6, 2019

The Anderson Collection at Stanford University presents an evening with Roberta Smith, co-chief art critic of The New York Times, and Jason Andrew, independent curator, producer, archivist and writer, on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m., at Bing Concert Hall on the Stanford campus.

The two will be in conversation about the work and life of American painter Elizabeth Murray (1940-2007) and the profound influence she continues to have on contemporary artists.

Smith reviewed Murray’s work in the May 1975 issue of Artforum, wrote a major essay for the artist’s mid-career retrospective in 1987, and in Murray’s obituary, Smith called her a “New York painter who reshaped Modernist abstraction.” Andrew is the founding partner at Artist Estate Studio, which manages the Estate of Elizabeth Murray.

The event coincides with Spotlight on Elizabeth Murray at the Anderson Collection, on view through March 25, 2019, and it is the fourth annual Burt and Deedee McMurtry Lecture hosted by the Anderson Collection.

This conversation is free and open to the public. No tickets are required and seats are on a first come, first served basis. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
