Rare Haydn materials in the Stanford Libraries

Over the past several months, I have been blogging about rare Haydn materials held in the Department of Special Collections, Memorial Library of Music, including one autograph manuscript, one important letter, and nine first or early score editions. Each item was digitized for deep storage in the Stanford Digital Repository, and high-quality, downloadable images have been made available to the world via links in SearchWorks. Thanks go to Astrid Smith, Rare Book and Special Collections Digitization Specialist, and the Digital Production Group for their excellent efforts on behalf of this project in support of Haydn, Patronage, and the Enlightenment.

What fun to explore and examine compositions by Papa Haydn! I hope you will enjoy reading about and viewing these works as much as I have enjoyed writing about them. Here, in no particular order:

The opera that Haydn never heard

Haydn’s duets for lovers

Haydn’s sonata for a Parisian lady

Haydn’s English songs: the canzonettas

Haydn’s “exquisitely captivating” Arianna a Naxos

Haydn’s Lieder of 1781

Haydn and the challenge of the baryton

Haydn, Pleyel, and the complete string quartets

Haydn, Burney, England, and The Creation

The Seasons, and Haydn slows down

In adddition, three new arrivals will be added to the Music Library’s collections. These have not yet been processed; please inquire at the Music Library for access.
